CFUW Oakville’s Advocacy Voice in Action – Mental Health, Asbestos, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

Advocacy is one of the pillars of CFUW. As a member of CFUW, you are part of a global network of women who work to improve the lives of girls and women in the world, and to promote education and social change. CFUW Oakville has a lively Advocacy Committee chaired by Anne Douglas and Brenda Mackay. Here’s an update on their activities and recent issues:

Meeting with John Oliver, MP Oakville
Linda Love, Brenda MacKay and Anne Douglas presented the mental health and asbestos policies prepared by CFUW Oakville to John Oliver, MP Oakville. Given Mr. Oliver’s background in healthcare, he shares our concern for mental health prevention and treatment programs. Mr. Oliver also received the CFUW National resolutions that were passed at the 2016 AGM in St. Catharines. Click on the Advocacy menu on this website for more information on the resolutions passed in 2016.

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Inquiry
The Inquiry was announced on August 3. The commission will report on the systemic causes behind the violence that Indigenous women and girls experience and their greater vulnerability to that violence.

Asbestos
In 2015 Canada finally permitted the UN world trade organization to put warning signs on asbestos products.  CFUW Oakville developed the asbestos policy for CFUW using resources provided by medical experts.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”  Margaret Mead
